Alicia Keys, Black Eyed Peas To Kick Off Soccer World Cup
By Paqui on 18 Mar 2010 with

Kicking off one of the world's biggest sporting events should be the job of some equally big superstars. The 2010 FIFA World Cup did its best to recruit A-list artists, and on Wednesday, the soccer organization confirmed that Alicia Keys, Shakira, the Black Eyed Peas and John Legend would be among the performers hitting the stage on June 10 at Orlando Stadium in Soweto/Johannesburg, South Africa.

"[It's] going to be insane," Keys told MTV News, shortly after the announcement. "I'm very excited about going to Africa, and the fact that the World Cup is in Africa is unbelievable for me! To be a part of that is incredible."

Malian duo Amadou & Mariam, Beninese singer Angelique Kidjo and South African rock group BLK JKS will be among the musicians celebrating the first World Cup on their continent. The opening celebration, which is held on the eve of the first match, will also likely include appearances by soccer legends past and present, plenty of celebrity power and more performances to be announced soon.

Keys is excited to go back to Africa and work with her Keep a Child Alive foundation, which provides support for children and families affected by HIV/AIDS.

FIFA is doing its part to help too: All net proceeds from the concert will be donated to 20 Centres for 2010, a campaign to build soccer-training centers in Africa that will also offer education and health-care services to disadvantaged communities.

Jay-Z And Beyonce Join Alicia Keys During New York Concert
By Paqui on 18 Mar 2010 with

It was a night of soaring vocals, positive messages and surprise guests when Alicia Keys' Freedom Tour stopped in her hometown of New York City on Wednesday evening at Madison Square Garden. The singer, who was joined onstage by Jay-Z, Beyoncé and Swizz Beatz, performed a string of songs from past to present and even showcased some of her dance skills.

Before the songstress emerged onstage, fans were treated to the soulful sounds of opening acts Jermaine Paul, Melanie Fiona and Robin Thicke. Paul, who has previously served as a background singer for Keys, was enthusiastic in his efforts to hype up the audience. Fiona kept the momentum moving with her powerful vocal range and charismatic smile while she performed songs like "It Kills Me" and new single "Ay Yo."

When Robin Thicke made his way to the stage, it was clear he was aware of his legions of female fans. Decked out in a dark suit and sunglasses, the singer crooned his way through his set, which included the thumping "Shakin' It 4 Daddy" and "Lost Without U." Thicke remained playful as well by ending his set with a sing-along to Lil Wayne's "A Milli."

Shortly after 9:30, the lights went out and the beginning of Michael Jackson's "They Don't Care About Us" filled the air. The drums of the 1996 track intensified as the night's main attraction appeared before fans on towering video screens. "I'm a renegade. I'm a truth seeker. They told me I would never make it and I did. They told me I wasn't strong enough but I am mighty. The element of freedom is tattooed on my heart," Keys announced.

Alicia Keys appeared in a chain-wrapped cage amid the smoke that slowly flooded the stage. She began the show with a medley of her track "Caged Bird" and "Love Is Blind." She whipped her hair from side to side until she made her way out of the spinning entrapment and happily towards the front of the stage.

"New York, you feeling good?" she asked the roaring crowd. There was no hesitation — the jam-packed arena was ready. Dressed in a tight black top, sparkling pants and a red coat with tails, Keys made full use of the stage by fluttering from side to side with her dancers during "You Don't Know My Name." She continued with songs like "Fallen," which she changed around vocally, and her rocking Jack White collaboration "Another Way to Die."

Opening act Jermaine Paul took the stage once again when Keys sat down at her piano for "Diary." While the two played vocal acrobatics around each other during the song's bridge, it was evident that they shared onstage chemistry. After a quick costume change into a sleek white dress, she performed "Superwoman" and "If I Can't Have You." The songstress took several moments throughout her show to explain the importance of believing in yourself.

But after another outfit change, it was her performance of "Put It in a Love Song" that really got fans riled up. Keys performed her way through the dance number, then introduced Beyoncé, who descended from a staircase and joined Keys for the remainder of the song, ending with a dance breakdown. This marks the very first time the two artists have ever performed together onstage. Keys slowed things down after the powerhouse female duet with songs like "Unthinkable" and "Try Sleeping With a Broken Heart."

And with Beyoncé making a surprise appearance onstage, it was only fitting that her husband do the same. As Keys momentarily stopped playing piano, Swizz Beatz ran onstage and was soon followed by none other than Jay-Z. Times Square and the city skyline engulfed the arena as scenes of the city shined brightly for the sea of people. There's something especially moving about listening to the ode to New York City "Empire State of Mind" while actually in the city itself.

Keys is always a master on piano, but her evening in New York proved her ability to put on a show with massive vocals, strong imagery and a powerful message.

Beyonce, Alicia Keys shoot music video in Rio slum
By Paqui on 10 Feb 2010 with

Grammy Award-winning singers Beyonce and Alicia Keys are filming a music video in Rio de Janeiro.

Sheri Ladner is a publicist with RCA Music Group, which includes Keys' label, J Records. She says the singers are shooting a video for their duet "Put It In a Love Song." The song is from Keys' recently released album "The Element of Freedom."

Brazilian television on Tuesday showed the singers performing together in front of cameras in the Morro da Conceicao shantytown. Ladner says the video will have scenes recorded at several locations across Rio. Keys already filmed one segment in Rio's Dona Marta slum. That shantytown became renowned worldwide after Michael Jackson went there to film the 1996 video "They Don't Care About Us."

Alicia Keys Finds "Freedom" From Motown Sound
By Paqui on 19 Dec 2009 with
NEW YORK (Reuters) - A music industry desperate for bankable superstars has all but anointed Alicia Keys as heir to the golden era of Motown, when Aretha Franklin, Smokey Robinson and others made it seem easy to pump out timeless R&B hits. Keys, however, is haunted by the prospect.

"The Motown era, the songs did something to you that you couldn't get enough of, they sent the hairs on your skin standing up and taught you about what love really is and life is," Keys, the 28-year-old hitmaker, told Reuters. "I think about it, all the time."

In many ways, Keys' fourth and newest album that hit stores this week, "The Element of Freedom," is a rebellious thrust away from a Nu-Motown sound that helped to win many fans.

Keys' earlier albums were filled with pleading love songs belted-out in her raspy voice, backed by her gospel-inflected piano playing. While "Element of Freedom" offers fewer soul-baring moments from behind the piano, it serves up many catchy, ringtone-worthy melodies, crunchy drum beats and synthesized grooves.

In the single, "Try Sleeping With a Broken Heart," Keys hits unmistakable pop pay dirt. The drum machine and organ sound like something from Prince's early 1980s playbook. And a duet with Beyonce, "Put It In a Love Song," might pack nightclub dance floors with its strong, bottom-heavy beat.

Keys' solo version of a recent collaboration with Beyonce's husband, Jay-Z, "Empire State of Mind," also appears on the record. The swaggering rap Jay-Z lent to the original track is absent, but Keys' smooth vocals keep the track a compelling, if less energetic, New York City anthem.

NEW SOUND, GOOD RECEPTION Reviews have been generally favorable according to website Metacritic.com, which compiles criticism and gives albums a score. "Element of Freedom" earned 71 points out of 100.

Keys has been among the hardest working people in showbiz since she broke onto the scene in 2001, and she and her growing cadre of musical collaborators have honed their craft.

Review of 'The Element of Freedom': The NY Times
By Paqui on 14 Dec 2009 with
Through most of “The Element of Freedom” Alicia Keys sings processionals. They’re slow, clean songs with semi-classical acoustic piano, soft-pop chord changes and simple, prominent hip-hop beats. They’ve nearly got a social purpose: They underline acts of inspired dignity, or informed desire, or virtuous defiance.

Even when she’s singing about losing it over a guy, as she does eight or nine times on the record, it comes across as the weakness of the mighty. Ms. Keys has enough presence of mind to reflect that love is a calculated risk, and can, given the right circumstances, produce greatness squared. (She’s found a way to sing about loneliness without demeaning herself: “These king-sized sheets,” she sings in “This Bed,” “need more than just a queen.”)

Ms. Keys started out more or less within the notion of neo-soul, but has moved on. This steadily anthemic music harks back less to the 1970s — soul’s golden age — than to the late ’80s. (Many of these songs, produced by Ms. Keys and/or Jeff Bhasker or Kerry Krucial Brothers, carry echoes of Prince’s wakeful ballads and Richard Marx’s adult-contemporary nuzzle (“Right Here Waiting.”) The self-possessed swoons line up into something like a concept album.

But all that queenliness, and the sameness of the tempo, start to wear you down. It’s not until the 10th track, “Put It in a Love Song,” that the record starts to bristle with a less regal impulse: flirting. Swizz Beatz comes in as the producer and Beyoncé as guest singer, and the two women knuckle down extracting promises (“Whoo!”) from a guy to bare his heart in a song (“Oh-oh-oh!”) or at least a text message. It’s got a quantitatively different energy, air-lifted from somewhere else — the thumping, step-dancing atmosphere of Beyoncé’s “Single Ladies,” basically.

Shortly after that the record ends on yet a different note, with “Empire State of Mind,” an acoustic and entirely sung version of her recent collaboration with Jay-Z. It’s tense and drumless until nearly the song’s last 30 seconds — a great tactic in R&B, where a bumping beat goes without saying — and it’s got a little passion; you hear the scratch and rip in her voice as she sings about poverty and ambition in her city, New York. Finally, she’s celebrating something outside of her control.

Drake Calls Alicia Keys Collaboration 'One Of The Best Moments Of My Career'
By Paqui on 09 Dec 2009 with
For decades now, artists have been collaborating without ever having met, thanks to the wonders of studio technology. But there's nothing like the real thing — as Drake testified about his collaboration with Alicia Keys, "Un-thinkable (I'm Ready)," which will be featured on Keys' forthcoming Element of Freedom LP, due December 15.

"They reached out and she said she really wanted me to do something on her project," Drake revealed to Rap-Up.com. "But she wanted me to do me, not do an Alicia Keys record. And man, she gave me one of the best studio experiences of my life.

"I came in there and instead of being like, 'Here's the beat, get to work,' she was just like, 'Play me your favorite songs and lets battle,' " he continued. "It's almost like the transition from [listening to] great music to making a song — like, no one even noticed it, because she started playing the keys and I just started writing the melodies."

Drake seems to have no end of superlatives about the experience. "It's probably one of the best moments of my career," he said. "I love that song. We listen to it nonstop."

Alicia Keys Streams New Album On Facebook
By Paqui on 07 Dec 2009 with
Alicia Keys fans will have another reason to compulsively check her Facebook fan page today: Keys is releasing her new album The Element of Freedom exclusively through the world's largest social network. Fans will be able to tune in to her Facebook Fan page beginning today, where they'll be able to stream the album free of charge (though they won't be able to download digitial copies). The album's "real" release date isn't until December 15. This marks the first time a world-famous artist has debuted their album through the site.

Now, it isn't unheard of for artists to debut albums and songs through the web, but this has long been an area dominated by MySpace. MySpace still sees its share of exclusives, but in the last few months Facebook has been getting an increasing amount of attention from artists. We've recently seen Chamillionaire and Sharkira release their new music videos exclusively though Ustream/Facebook, and there have been a number of big-name concerts streamed through the site as well.

Alicia Keys: 'I definitely want a family'
By Paqui on 29 Nov 2009 with
Alicia Keys has revealed that she would like to start a family in the near future. The Grammy-winning singer, who has been rumoured to be dating hip-hop artist Swizz Beatz, has said that she wants to be a mother.

The 28-year-old told the Toronto Sun: "I definitely want a family. To be a mother, that's going to be a beautiful time in life. I don't feel like I reached the top. I have a lot more to climb. I want to continue growing and expressing myself creatively."

Keys, who releases her fourth studio album The Element Of Freedom on December 15, has said that her latest effort includes more emotionally honest songs than her previous offerings.

She added: "You will hear a mixture of strong and delicate. A new sound and a new emotion. That's a lot of who I am right now. Before, I thought I could only show the strong side of me. Pain is just an immediate feeling that drives me to write. But now I can say that even in joy I can express myself."

Alicia Keys and Beyonce rumored to collaborate on a song
By Paqui on 14 Nov 2009 with

Alicia Keys did not want to stop at collaborating with rapper Jay-Z for his song “Empire State of Mind”, she has also decided to team up for a duet with Jay-Z’s wife Beyonce.

The Alicia Keys and Beyonce duet is said to appear on Alicia Keys’ forthcoming album The Element of Freedom. The unnamed track was reportedly produced by Swizz Beatz and is an “uptempo club number” according to R&B blog Toyas-World.net.

Alicia Keys has gone on record prior to this announcement to say that there would be two major collaborations on her album The Element of Freedom but of course failed to mention with who.
There is no telling how the collaboration will map out. Alicia Keys is known to have a very soulful husky sound while Beyonce’s voice drips with tons of vibrato.

At any rate, this single is sure to rile up more anticipation for Alicia’s The Element of Freedom. The Element of Freedom is scheduled for a December 15 release.
